The UCC Language Centre had a good news story this month as they welcomed twin sisters, Marina and Natália, from Brasil to study English in UCC after their English institute closed down. Marina and Natália are from a small town called Rio Claro about two hours north west of Sao Paulo. Marina has an undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in Business Administration and has worked in Human Resources in Brasil. Natália has a degree in Biology from UNESP and hopes to go on to postgraduate education, perhaps even start a PhD under the Science without Borders programme in UCC.
The twins came to study English in Dublin earlier this year and were in the unfortunate position of seeing their English institute close down. Marina and Natália were upset and worried about what would happen next. The Language Centre in UCC reacted quickly to the news that many English schools throughout Ireland faced immediate closure and offered scholarships to a select number of affected students. After their second school closed down, the twins heard about the scholarships at UCC, proceeded to apply and were successful. Now, they are extremely happy to be settling into Cork life and continuing with their English classes under the scholarship. They are enjoying “small classes, excellent teachers and a much better experience than earlier this year”.
Marina and Natália see English language as one of the gateways into better jobs and postgraduate options in Brasil. They already have work experience and hope to stay in Ireland for another 6 months so that they can improve their English further.
The twins also have a part time job as au pairs, minding 2 year old twins in Cork City! This part time job really gives them insight into Irish culture and family life. They find the experience in Cork “amazing”. The weather is a little tough at times but they truly appreciate Cork architecture, culture and the friendliness of people here.
