Trick or treat? World Ghost Convention at Cork City Gaol.

The 10th World Ghost Convention was held in Cork’s magnificent, not to mention haunted, 19th century City Gaol this Halloween. Established to help those who have had supernatural experiences, the convention raises public awareness of the spiritual world and reassures people that they are not alone in their encounters with the ‘other side’. In a colourful line-up of speakers at the gaol, folklorists from UCC’s Department of Folklore and Ethnology contributed talks on making contact with life beyond the grave along with the link between fairies (mystical beings in human form common in Irish legends and beliefs) and ghosts (considered apparitions of dead people). Speakers included Helen Barrett, the White Witch of Cobh and leader of Ireland’s 3,500 witches and warlords, who advised those afraid of seeing a ghost that they do not like the sound of bells while smudging your house with white sage is another way to keep them from your door…gives your home a nice, fresh smell too!
