It’s sport Jim, but not as we know it…

The world’s first ever Paddy Games were held at UCC this summer. And why not, since Cork man Colin Carroll came up with the brilliant idea to challenge our views of what constitutes sport and what is just plain…well, fun! Colin is no slouch when it comes to alternative sports. He was crowned amateur Elephant Polo World Champion in Nepal and became the first Irishman to compete in the Sumo World Championships in Japan. Through the Paddy Games, Colin challenges the conventional wisdom that we should only jump OVER the hurdles, race FORWARDS and, worst of all, that the doggy-paddle is not a competitive swimming stroke – I know, elitism at its worst. In these times of doom and gloom, take a moment to enjoy some of the highlights from the inaugural Paddy Games and as an Irish dancer, here is my personal favourite: the Irish Dancing Hurdles
